Unique Toys

Pat a cheek and you get a squeak. Someone slaps your forehead and a horn honks. If that idea sounds like fun then you'll want to get your hands on the latest toy from Japanese firm Tomy - a gadget for the family that turns the entire human body into a musical instrument.

Destined to cause more tears before bedtime than most, as over-excited children bash and prod each other to create amusing noises, the new toy encourages users to make beautiful music, or just silly sound effects, by holding it in one hand and prodding and poking their human partner with the other.

The hand-sized toy, called Ningen Gakki ("Human Musical Instrument"), has four exposed silver electrodes that pass a weak electric current into the user and then, of course, through the other players when they are touched. Completing the circuit creates sound through remote speakers.

Up to four people at once can learn to mix sound with tapping, caressing or, in "drum mode", even hitting one another to create an orgy of comedy sound effects. Touch, let go and then touch again and you can even get a vibrato-style ditty going if you kick the little gingerbread man-shaped console into performance mode.
